Reducing smoking and vaping in Indiana would not only improve Hoosier health, but would lower Medicaid and other healthcare costs and save businesses money. Evidence shows one of the most effective ways to reduce use is to increase the tax on cigarettes and e-cigarettes.\u00a0<\/p><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8cc5fa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a8cc5fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Key Findings<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57ffa3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"57ffa3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"block wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\"><p>This report summary consolidates four separate research reports commissioned by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation and developed by experts from the University of Illinois Chicago.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/section><section class=\"block wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\"><p>Specific findings include:\u00a0<\/p><\/section><section class=\"container block wordpress-block wordpress-list core-list\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\"><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tobacco contributes to more than 11,000 Hoosier deaths per year.\u00a0<\/li><li>Indiana businesses spend $3.1 billion in smoking-related \u201chidden taxes\u201d each year due to factors such as absenteeism, smoke breaks, lost productivity and more.\u00a0<\/li><li>Raising the cigarette tax by $2 per pack would not only save thousands of Hoosier lives, it would also provide an additional $356 million in annual state revenue.\u00a0<\/li><li>An estimated 45,000 current smokers would quit smoking if Indiana increased the cigarette tax by $2 per pack.\u00a0<\/li><li>E-cigarettes are the most popular form of nicotine consumption among youth.
