For persons who inject drugs, the one-time use of sterile syringes is the safest, most successful method for limiting the transmission of blood-borne infections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-19753c26-a4c1-4073-8bef-af2c76d1ec4e\">Just ask Haley Bohannon, Peer Recovery Coach for the Marion County Public Health Department\u2019s syringe services program. When Bohannon was actively using drugs and needed a needle, she didn\u2019t consider if the needle potentially had hepatitis C because her addiction was so strong. Today, she is four-and-a-half years sober, and through her role as a Peer Recovery Coach with the Safe Syringe Access and Support (SSAS) Program, she works to help others avoid the same choices she had to make while managing her substance use disorder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWhen our clients learn that I have been in their shoes, they\u2019re very surprised,\u201d Haley said. \u201cTo be able to share my strength with them is really rewarding.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>As a Peer Recovery Coach, Haley supports people with substance use disorder, working out of a mobile unit used to operate the county\u2019s first legal syringe services program. The Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) unveiled its program in April 2019 with funding support from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-caf49b31-852a-42bf-8411-99af973ccdd9\">Employees like Haley are helping to make a difference in Hoosiers\u2019 lives. Within the first month of opening, a male client visited the mobile unit for sterile syringes. He continued to use drugs, but more recently, he came to the clinic looking healthier. \u201cHe told me he was able to begin substance use disorder treatment and that during a time when he didn\u2019t have anyone, our services helped to save his life,\u201d Haley said. \u201cI\u2019m glad we can be there for people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"block-d2582be3-06a2-4b92-961a-d050020bb101\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/women-at-table-1024x556.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/women-at-table-1024x556.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/women-at-table-300x163.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/women-at-table-768x417.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/women-at-table.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-77a5a8db-6d33-4d66-9f77-45004d3de275\">In addition to needle exchange services, the SSAS Program also provides clients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-90c24a92-84f0-4264-b045-da3978c8e822\"><li>HIV and hepatitis C rapid screening<\/li><li>Education around safer drug use practices<\/li><li>Referrals for substance use disorder and mental health treatment<\/li><li>Wound care education<\/li><li>Immunizations<\/li><li>Referral to primary care<\/li><li>Access to health insurance coverage<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f7899380-3793-40db-ae2c-f726e743d371\">Initiatives like the SSAS Program are connecting Hoosiers to the help they need to combat substance use disorder, but barriers remain, such as transportation and a lack of connectivity among providers who treat substance use disorder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1c6509a9-45c7-48fe-be90-2e5bfd75b197\">In Indiana, fatal drug poisonings (overdose deaths), which declined by 12% between 2017 and 2018, increased by 6% in 2019 to 1,700 deaths. These figures increased sharply in the first five months of 2020: fatal drug poisonings (overdose deaths) for the 12-month period ending in May grew by 17% in the U.S. and by 22% in Indiana from 2019 to 2020 \u2013 a troubling trend that experts attribute in part to the hardship and isolation forced by COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"block-3cf94ac3-283f-48c6-9b28-71bf057e7c36\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/woman-standing-1024x556.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/woman-standing-1024x556.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/woman-standing-300x163.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/woman-standing-768x417.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/woman-standing.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3c43ac3f-07d2-49e8-a589-854cb78fca0e\">Haley wants those suffering from substance use disorder to know one thing: \u201cWe support you regardless of what stage you\u2019re at,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re not here to judge. We\u2019re here to help break down any barrier you have to accessing support.\u201d&nbsp;She also emphasizes the importance of the community understanding substance use disorder so they can be a supportive force in driving change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ef5c88dc-c4cb-44db-84a5-044f3dc790c2\">\u201cThe stigma surrounding substance use disorder often prevents people from seeking support,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe can all help by learning more and using stigma-reducing language.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dd12679b-a3bb-4baa-a43d-ff26fe4df63b\"><em>To learn more about the SSAS Program, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/marionhealth.org\/safesyringe\/\">marionhealth.org\/safesyringe<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Haley Bohannon overcame substance-use disorder more than four years ago.
