Annual healthcare expenditures directly caused by tobacco use in Indiana equal $3.4 billion. While the health implications of smoking cigarettes are well known, what\u2019s lesser known are the smoking-related costs Indiana businesses pay every year.<\/p><\/section><section class=\"block wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\"><p>From extra absenteeism and unsanctioned smoking breaks to excess healthcare costs, employees who smoke cost Indiana employers\u00a0<strong>$3.1 billion annually<\/strong>, which serves as an additional \u201ctax\u201d for Indiana businesses equaling 1.7% of total wages. In Marion County alone in 2022, businesses paid nearly $609 million in this hidden \u201csmoking tax.\u201d<\/p><\/section><section class=\"block wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\"><p>To lessen the impact of these hidden taxes and make Indiana more economically competitive, it is critical to decrease the smoking rate.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Richard-M.-Fairbanks-Tobacco-Report-October-2018.pdf\">One method proven most effective<\/a>\u00a0is to raise the cigarette tax, of which Indiana\u2019s is currently the 12<sup>th<\/sup>-lowest in the country. If Indiana\u2019s per-pack cigarette tax increased by $2:<\/p><\/section><section class=\"container block wordpress-block wordpress-list core-list\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12\"><ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Projected new annual revenue to Indiana would total more than $356 million.<\/li><li>Approximately 45,000 current adult smokers would quit smoking.<\/li><li>Indiana\u2019s long-term healthcare costs savings would equal more than $795 million.<\/li><\/ol><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"block wordpress-block wordpress-paragraph core-paragraph\"><p>The findings in these two reports make it clear Indiana\u2019s high smoking rate undermines the success of the business community and show how the state could decrease the smoking rate while also reducing healthcare costs and generating revenue at the same time.<\/p><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f08a043
